Susan Terri Ann George
After surviving a horrific sexual attack, Susan Terri Ann George waived her right to anonymity in order to encourage others to come forward. Her strength, and determination for justice saw four other victims of the same man come forward leading to a long term conviction.
Determined to start her life again, Susan began by referring to herself as Terri George, and embarked on a Level 3 counseling course at Coleg Gwent so that she could work with and speak out on behalf of, victims of rape. With no confidence and little education, Terri initially struggled but her determination to succeed led her to passing a Level 3 counseling course.
Terri's return to learning came about from a desire for justice and a determination to help other people but she soon found herself with a real vocation. 'I would say to anyone young or old, you can achieve anything if you put your mind to it' says Terri, 'The staff and tutors and mentors at my college gave me the kind of support I had never experienced. They gave me confidence, a positive sense of worth and never failed to support me. Learning has changed my entire life, I want to do better, to continue to learn and become the best counselor I can possibly be. If I can do it, then anyone can.'
Terri now sits on the IAG for Gwent Police, is a volunteer for victim support, has enrolled on a Level 5 counseling course and is also studying for a crisis and trauma advanced diploma. Terri's strength, determination and desire to be a voice for others are a shining example of how learning can help in transforming lives.
