Mike Rivers

Mike Rivers, a coke oven worker at Corus Port Talbot, developed an interest in Mental Health issues following a workshop run by the WEA in 2009.

A Union Learning rep for Unite, Mike organized a WULF funded Mental Health First Aid course for himself and his colleagues, before going on to complete the ASIST course.

'I found a subject that I found very interesting and which I feel can make a big difference to people's lives,' says Mike 'I hope that my learning journey will help inspire others at my workplace. If I can tackle the difficult issues surrounding mental health, then anyone can.'

Mike's efforts have been picked up the Corus Management, and as a result Corus Port Talbot are to incorporate Mental Health Awareness training into core Corus Drug and Alcohol policy for everyone on site.

Mike's nominator, Julie Ann Evans, of the UNITE Union says that 'Mike's enthusiasm for learning and promoting this very sensitive subject in a male dominated environment has been infectious, making a very real difference both to him, his colleagues and his workplace.'

Mike is now looking into funding to support his training as a qualified counselor through the Network of Excellence.

'I hope I can lead by example,' says Mike, 'and I am delighted that my story has lead other non- traditional learners at Corus to try courses for themselves.'
