The Gathering

Set up in September 2009 by two young homeless people, The Gathering began by promoting the rights and entitlements of Cardiff's homeless youth by providing them with an opportunity to become actively involved in challenging oppression, influencing decision-making and helping to bring about positive change.

Within its six month life span the project has grown exponentially, and has become involved in city-wide decision -making processes in the youth homelessness and housing sector, attending events and conferences across Cardiff; voicing their views and having them taken into consideration, helping to shape their own futures. Aiming to provide young people with the opportunities to learn about the realities of homelessness, The Gathering has also worked with Cardiff University to create a short film challenging the stereotypes of homelessness, which has become an invaluable educational tool.

Daniel, a young person involved with the project believes that 'The Gathering' has been a 'real opportunity to turn my life around. I am now living comfortably in my own flat. I am definitely going to stick with The Gathering and prove that not all young people are bad.' Another of the members, Jess, has says that 'Being homeless isn't about sitting on the street with a dog, a cider bottle and asking people for money. More people need to realise that and so that's what I'm going to tell them.'

The Gathering has seen its members acquire knowledge, new skills and move themselves onto completely independent living, education, employment and training. On top of this they still continue to be involved in shaping Cardiff Youth Service, proving that they are not only real champions of equality but also a true inspiration to others.
