Active Citizenship: Active Communities- Free training for ESOL practitioners
Background NIACE and LLU+ developed the successful ESOL Citizenship materials for ESOL learners in 2006. Written in consultation with learners and practitioners, the materials contain a range of ideas for activities in a citizenship context which have been very popular. In 2009 the Home Office commissioned NIACE to update the pack and adapt it so that it better meets the community cohesion/active citizenship agenda. The pack now contains updated materials and new chapters including:
- updated sections on What is citizenship, Parliament and the UK as a Diverse Society
- new sections on Getting involved in your Community and Faiths and Beliefs.
Following the series of workshops in England, NIACE Dysgu Cymru is now offering four training events across Wales. The materials produced for Wales, and the training events are funded by the Welsh Assembly Government.
Who would benefit from attending? These workshops should appeal to all practitioners who deliver ESOL within all sectors, specifically:
- ESOL and citizenship teachers
- ESOL managers.
Aim: To provide learning materials and practical activities to support ESOL practitioners teaching learners with Entry level ESOL skills who wish to apply for UK citizenship.
Objectives for participants: The workshop will offer participants the opportunity to:
- Look at the new 2010 Citizenship materials for ESOL Learners
- Share ideas on delivering the materials
- Update participants on current thinking on citizenship and community cohesion
- Share feedback from the Active Citizenship pilots and trainers
- Receive their own copy of the new materials.
