working for more and different adult learners
Skills for Life Day - 14 May 2012
Aim of the day:
- To engage, enthuse and motivate adults to raise their skills levels and/or gain new skills. This includes those who have problems with basic language, IT and financial literacy skills to seek further help to solve their problems
-
To communicate the message that help is at hand from existing agencies and learning providers
Ideas for events:
- Storytelling workshops: how to read to your children
- Confidence-building
- RAW Skills: utilising the BBC's online resources for basic literacy (also incorporates financial literacy materials)
- Cooking on a budget
- "Minging to Blinging" (How to dress stylishly on a budget)
- Making the most of your pension
- Understandably, adults can be embarrassed about admitting they have problems with language or numerical literacy so it is always best to "embed" these targets into other types of events. Also, use snappy titles for the events ("Minging to Blinging" is a real, and excellent, example)
