The Bevan Foundation and NIACE Dysgu Cymru invite you to attend a major new conference to discuss approaches to basic skills through all the life stages.

In the first three terms of the National Assembly for Wales, there have been a range of approaches deployed to address the issue of basic skills across all ages. There can be no doubt that this is a priority area for policy makers to ensure that:

  • All children are prepared for learning when they begin school
  • The number of children leaving primary school struggling with reading, writing and maths is reduced
  • All young people leave school with the appropriate skills for further learning or work
  • The number of adults with poor basic skills is significantly reduced.

Approaches have ranged from an all-age strategy to a national Literacy Plan targeting improvements in 7-11 year olds. But what approaches work and what are the challenges for the future?

This conference will attempt to look at these questions and generate solutions.
